This year I have decided to do what it takes to be healthy.
To be open and honest I am very much not in healthy shape. I have not fully bounced back from my last pregnancy (I get really sick and go toxemic which causes me to swell and gain weight with my pregnancies.) I was doing great with working our and eating right after my last birth. I lost a lot of weight and was happily moving in that right direction to reclaiming my body.
Then my husband lost his job. My stress level skyrocketed. When he was unable to find work he started his own business. I started my blog and Etsy store which have helped. However, to get my work done I have had to stay up late after everyone went to sleep which means I have been running on way too little sleep. Between my work, taking care of my kids, my home and church responsibilities I have been stretched a little too thin. I stopped working out, I defaulted too many nights to quick meals that were high on carbs but delicious and I started a bad habit of snacking on munchies and I am sitting a lot more. Long story short I gained back everything I worked so hard to loose and as of the beginning of this year, I weighed more than I ever have (other than in the last weeks of pregnancy) in my entire life.
I made a bunch of goals at the beginning of the year about health. Now that we are a few months into the year it was time to assess how I’m doing with those goals and where I can improve. Some I have done great with. Others…not so much. With spring arriving it was time to make a fresh start and a new push in the right direction.
I was excited to learn about Nature Made’s 30-Day Healthy Habit Builder Program. Yes, I know that Nature Made is a Vitamin company. Actually, they are the #1 in the nation for quality vitamins. I have used and loved their vitamins for years, so when I found out that they had created a healthy habit program to help people set and accomplish health goals I was excited to check it out.
The Truth is that anyone can develop healthy habits. They just often need a little help. The first step to forming a healthy habit is setting achievable goals. (If you struggle with successful goal setting I wrote a great post called 12 Steps For Successful Goal Setting which I know can help you.) So how the program works is that they have you pick 4 Health habits you want to develop over a 30 day period. Then they set weekly challenges to help you incorporate those habits into your daily life. Now for the fun part…Nature Made will REWARD you for your progress with various prizes and coupons and such as you accomplish your challenges. They even have a grand prize of $5,000* that everyone who enters their program is entered into. Super fun….right? (for the full rules, regulations and details just visit NatureMade.com/Challenge)

Even before I found out about Nature Made’s program I knew that there were 4 areas for my health that I needed to improve. Their program has really helped me to actually be successful with these areas.
1- Eating Better.
I knew that I needed to break the bad habits of snacking on munchies and eating quick and easy high carb meals all the time. To help with this I decided to take the Whole 30 Challenge (No Dairy, Sugar, Grains or Beans for 30 Days) I can’t tell you how much this has helped. My meals aren’t quick and easy since I have to make them from scratch, but they are still delicious and nutritious. I have already lost 9 pounds in the last 2 weeks, I have more energy and I generally feel better. I am glad my hubby is such a good sport to do the challenge with me so that I don’t have to do it alone.
2- Drinking Enough Water.
I know that water intake is very important to a healthy happy body. But knowing is not always doing. I had gotten pretty bad at drinking enough. (If you want to learn the benefits of drinking the proper amount of water as well as how to calculate what that proper amount is you can check out my article Top 6 Benefits to Drinking Enough Water). I have found that I am able to drink more water if I put a bit of lemon juice in it. The lemon juice also has the benefit of helping gently cleanse the toxins from the body along with the water.
3- Being more active.
Due to my blog and Graphic Design work for my etsy store I find myself sitting a lot more than normal. The winter didn’t help much either. Thankfully, I have an elliptical machine that I have easy access to and with it worming up I have been able to take the kids on more walks to the park. I have found that the more active I am, the more active I am. I have more energy to dance around the livingroom with my kids or run around the park once we get there. My kids love it.
Despite eating uber healthy and drinking plenty of water my body still needs supplements. Since I have been lax with vitamins these last few months (not a good thing) I went and checked what I had and what I needed. I realized that I was out or close to being out of some of our mainstay vitamins. It was time to buy some more.
My favorite brand of vitamins has always been Nature Made. Not only are they high quality, but if I buy them at Walmart they are really great priced. I just went to Walmart with my kids a few days ago and was able to get bottles of Chewable Vitamin C, Fish Oil, Vitamin D3, and VitaMelts Vitamin B12 (this last one at my husband’s request) all for less than $25! Now that is a steal of a deal. Other Naturemade Vitamins I often purchase and swear by are Magnesium (and Vitamin B6 needed to help the magnesium absorb properly) I take these to keep my heart condition in check.
Already I am seeing such an amazing difference in my over all health, Energy, Emotional wellbeing and general happiness. I know that if I keep up with these healthy habits that not only will I continue to feeling healthier and happier with more energy (but I will finally be able to fit into my favorite outfits again 😉
