Salt Lake County is rolling out a fantastic opportunity this year! Introducing the My County Rec Pass program, exclusively for kids aged 5-18 residing in Salt Lake County. It’s a FREE pass granting access to all Salt Lake County-operated recreation centers and amenities.
With this pass, your kids can dive into a myriad of recreational activities, from swimming to sports, fitness classes to community events. Registration is open now, and all you need to do is head to your local rec center with your children to sign up for this incredible opportunity. 2. Salt Lake County Summer Reading Program
Hey Salt Lake County families! Get ready for another summer of reading adventures with the Salt Lake County Library’s Summer Reading Program! Designed to keep your kids and youth engaged and excited about reading throughout the summer break, this program is back again this year with more incentives and fun than ever before.
Participation is easy! Simply swing by your local branch to pick up a reading record, or if you prefer, you can register and track your progress online. Encourage your kids to log their reading and activities throughout the summer. Once they’ve completed their reading record, just bring it back to any County Library branch. As a reward, they’ll get to choose a book of their choice, gain entry into a special drawing, and receive a coupon sheet for local attractions. 3. Magic & Mayhem at the Salt Lake County Libraries
Calling all magic enthusiasts and mischief-makers! Get ready for an enchanting experience at the Salt Lake County Libraries this summer with Magic & Mayhem! While applications for the O.W.L. Camp for youth ages 11-18 have unfortunately closed for 2024, fear not, because the Magic & Mayhem activities are open to everyone, and best of all, they’re completely free!
Starting in July, brace yourselves for a month filled with mystical crafts, spellbinding activities, and magical adventures at all Salt Lake County Library branches. Although the schedule hasn’t been posted yet, keep an eye out for updates on their website here. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to unleash your inner wizard and join in the Magic & Mayhem!
4. Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman
Escape the summer heat and discover the hidden gem of Blackridge Reservoir! Nestled amidst picturesque surroundings, this serene oasis offers a sandy beach, invigorating waters, a playground for the little ones, and access to scenic trailheads. Whether you’re seeking a day of relaxation by the water or a thrilling hike along the nearby hillside trails, Blackridge Reservoir has something for everyone to enjoy.
Please note, while access to the reservoir remains free, starting in 2024, there will be a $15 all-day parking fee for vehicles accessing Blackridge Reservoir on weekends and holidays between May 1st and September 7th. However, parking remains free on weekdays and non-holidays. Plan your visit accordingly and learn more about this tranquil destination here. 5. Parks and Splash pads
Exploring parks and splash pads is a quintessential summer activity for families in Salt Lake County. Not only do parks offer a space for kids to burn off energy and play on well-maintained playground equipment, but splash pads provide a refreshing way to beat the summer heat without worrying about water bills. Salt Lake County boasts an array of fantastic parks and splash pads waiting to be discovered and enjoyed.
Parks and splash pads offer families in Salt Lake County the perfect combination of outdoor fun and relief from the summer heat. With well-maintained playground equipment and refreshing water features, these destinations are ideal for letting kids expend their energy and cooling off without worrying about water bills. If you are looking for some new park/splash pad recommendations these are some of my family’s favorites:
- Magna Regional Park (4042 S 7200th W, Magna, UT 84044): This sprawling 62-acre park, currently being developed in stages, offers a variety of amenities including restrooms, pavilions, an inclusive destination playground, a splash pad, walking paths, and a multi-purpose field.
- Veteran’s Memorial Park (1985 W 7800 S, West Jordan, UT 84088): Situated across from the West Jordan Library, this park boasts several fields, multiple playgrounds catering to various age groups, pavilions, and picnic areas, providing ample space for family gatherings and playtime.
- Murray City Park (296 E Murray Park Ave, Salt Lake City, UT 84107): With its large playground, picnic areas, sports courts, disc golf course, and swimming pool complex, Murray City Park offers a plethora of recreational opportunities for visitors. Families can also explore scenic walking and biking trails weaving through wooded areas and open fields.
- Sugar House Park (1330 E 2100 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84106): Spanning 110 acres, Sugar House Park features amenities such as a large pond, hilly terrain perfect for sledding, access to Parley’s Trail, and a pedestrian-friendly road. Families can enjoy summer picnics amidst picturesque surroundings and watch as kids have a blast on the playground.
- Sierra Newbold Memorial Playground (5900 W New Bingham Highway, West Jordan): A poignant tribute to a young girl, this playground celebrates childhood joy and innocence. With its expansive and accessible play areas suitable for all ages,. Seriously this playground is huge with soo many things for kids to do as well as a fantastic splash pad, it offers a place for families to create cherished memories while honoring Sierra’s legacy.

6. Wheeler Historical Farm
Discover the charm of Wheeler Historic Farm, nestled at 6351 S 900 E, Murray, UT 84121. This expansive 75-acre working farm doubles as a public park, offering a delightful array of attractions for visitors of all ages. From wagon rides to seasonal events, farmers markets to scenic trails, and a playground for the little ones, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Children especially delight in getting up close with the farm animals, while families can take advantage of the picnic tables scattered throughout the property for a relaxing outdoor meal. While admission to the farm is free, some activities incur small charges ranging from $0.50 to $2, ensuring affordable fun for all. Plan your visit to Wheeler Historic Farm and immerse yourself in a slice of rural heritage right in the heart of Murray.
7. Temple Square Organ Recitals
Experience the timeless tradition of Temple Square Organ Recitals, open to the public and spanning over a century. Delight in thirty-minute performances by skilled Tabernacle and Temple Square organists, as well as guest organists. These daily recitals take place at 12:00 p.m. in the Tabernacle, Monday through Saturday, with an additional session on Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Whether you’re a music enthusiast or simply seeking a moment of serenity, immerse yourself in the majestic soundscapes of these renowned organ performances at Temple Square.
8. Concerts in the Park
Experience the joy of free evening concerts with your family throughout the summer months in Salt Lake County. These lively events offer entertainment for all ages and are a beloved tradition in many cities. For those eager to plan ahead, here are a couple of annual favorites: Starry Nights at Taylorsville Centennial Plaza invites you to enjoy live music and delicious fare from food trucks every Friday night from May to September. Keep an eye on the Taylorsville City website for updates on featured bands and performances.
Alternatively, Murray City’s Family Night Concerts at the Senior Recreation Center offer free concerts on the 2nd Monday of each month from June to September. Held in the outdoor plaza, these concerts run from 7:00 PM to 7:50 PM. In case of inclement weather, the concerts may be moved indoors, but they remain open to the public of all ages. During the summer months, several cities in Salt Lake County extend the outdoor entertainment tradition with free movies in the park. 10. UOU Star Party
Join the University of Utah Department of Physics and Astronomy for an illuminating experience at their free public Star Parties, held every CLEAR Wednesday night atop the South Physics Building on the University of Utah campus. Located at 115 South 1400 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84112, the University of Utah South Physics Observatory offers an opportunity to explore the cosmos under the guidance of knowledgeable astronomers.
During the summer months, the observatory welcomes visitors starting at 9:00 pm, while in spring and fall, festivities commence at 8:00 pm. Winter Star Parties begin at 7:00 pm to coincide with earlier nightfall. Mark your calendars and prepare to gaze at the wonders of the universe during these captivating events.
11. Free Museums and Historical Sites
Explore the wealth of free museums and historical sites scattered across Salt Lake County, offering enriching experiences for families and history enthusiasts alike. Embark on a journey through Utah’s heritage with these educational and captivating destinations:
- Kearns (Utah Governor’s) Mansion (603 E South Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84102): Step into the past with guided tours of this historic mansion, available on the first Wednesday of each month from April to November, as well as special holiday tours in December.
