Sharing is caring!

Are you looking for fun ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with your Family?

I love teaching my children about other cultures. This is one of the reasons we love to travel with our kids. Since Mexico is one of the countries that border ours, I think it’s a good thing to learn more about our neighbors. Cinco de Mayo is a great opportunity for families to come together and celebrate Mexican culture.

This day, observed on May 5th, commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It has since become a day of celebration in both Mexico and the United States. Here are 10 fun ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo as a family.

Cook a Mexican Feast

One of the best ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo is to indulge in delicious Mexican cuisine. Take this opportunity to cook a Mexican feast with your family. You can do this with simple dishes like guacamole, salsa, or tacos. Or you can go all out and try more complex dishes like chiles en nogada or mole poblano.

Whatever Mexican dishes you decide to make, involve your kids in the cooking process by assigning them simple tasks like mixing or chopping. Not only will this be a fun activity, but it will also teach your kids about different cultures and cuisines.

Decorate the House

Create a festive atmosphere by decorating your home with Cinco de Mayo-themed decorations. You can make paper flowers, or string up colorful papel picado (Click here for my free Printable Papel Picado inspired banner). These decorations will add a festive touch to your home and help your family get into the spirit of the celebration.

Have a piñata

Piñatas are a traditional and fun Mexican party activity. My kids love piñatas and often ask for them for their birthdays because they are so fun. Piñatas are bright and colorful and can come in so many shapes and sizes. You can buy them from the store or make your own.

Then you fill it with small toys and candy and hang it from a tree or beam. Once the piñata is hung, it’s time to blindfold your kids and let them take turns trying to whack it open with a stick. This is a fun activity that kids of all ages will love to participate in.

Have a Mexican Dance Party

Put on some lively Mexican music and have a dance party with your family. Teach your kids traditional Mexican dances like salsa or merengue, or just let loose and have fun. This is a great way to get active and enjoy some family bonding time.

Make Mexican Crafts

Get creative and make some Mexican crafts with your kids. You can make sombreros out of paper plates, create papel picado with tissue paper, or even make your own maracas. These crafts are not only fun but will also give your kids a chance to learn about Mexican culture.

Watch a Mexican Movie

Choose a Mexican movie that the whole family can enjoy. It can be a classic like “Coco” or “The Three Caballeros” or “The Book of Life.” This is a great way to spend some quality family time together while learning about Mexican culture.

Learn Some Spanish

Cinco de Mayo is a great opportunity to learn some basic Spanish words and phrases. Teach your kids some simple Spanish words like hola (hello), gracias (thank you), and adiós (goodbye). You can even try to have a conversation in Spanish with your family. This will not only be fun but will also be a great way to introduce your kids to a new language.

Have a Mexican Game Night

Gather the family and play some traditional Mexican games like Lotería, a game similar to Bingo, or the Mexican card game Conquian. You can also try playing a game of Mexican train dominoes or piñata party. These games are not only fun but will also give your kids a chance to learn about Mexican culture.

Read Mexican Books Together

You are never too old for a good kid’s book. reading these books together is a great way to learn about Mexican culture. Choose books like “The Piñata Story” or “Lucia the Luchadora.” These stories will not only be entertaining but will also teach your kids about Mexican values and beliefs.

Have a Mexican Hot Chocolate Night

End your Cinco de Mayo celebration with a warm cup of Mexican hot chocolate. This is a delicious treat that is perfect for a cool spring evening. You can even make it a fun activity by having your kids help you make the hot chocolate from scratch.

You can do these activities together with your family or invite over some friends to join in the fun. Whether you decide to cook a Mexican feast or have a dance party, there are many ways to celebrate this important day. By participating in these activities, you and your family can learn about Mexican culture, values, and traditions, while creating lasting memories together.
