Experiencing The Tower Bridge Tour & Monument

Did you know that you can go on a tour inside The Tower Bridge & Monument?

The Tower Bridge is London's most Iconic bridge, that isn't actually the London bridge (which many Americans mistake it for). I guess it is probably because of how it has been portrayed in so many blockbuster movies.

The Tower Bridge was built in 1894  as a sort of a hybrid between a bascule and suspension bridge. It was built right next to the Tower of London crossing the river Thames.  

When I learned that there was an actual tower bridge tour where you could go up inside the towers and cross over the bridge on the upper walkway and even visit the engine rooms, I knew I had to go.  

The first part of the tour took us up an elevator to the upper walkway. we first explored the right-hand walkway which in addition to having a glass path to look down below also had mirrors above (perfect for selfies.)  

Along the walkway, you could look out over the Thames via windows and learn about the Bridges history with info signs along the walk. 

After we were done exploring we went back into the main tower where we got to watch a movie about the bridge before officially crossing to the other tower via the left-hand walkway. 

This walkway also had a glass floor and signs along the way with more of the history of the bridge. I can't believe it took about 100 years from conception to reality though it only took 8 years to actually build. 

When we reached the other end of the bridge we found ourselves into another room (which if you looked up had some cool statues showing men at work on the bridge. 

Then we descended the stairs to the ground floor (I think there was an elevator for those who needed it.) All along the stairways were fun signs telling more of the history of the bridge. 

Lastly, after finishing the main tour of the bridge we followed the painted path to the entrance to the engine rooms.

These rooms were fascinating. To see the behind the scenes gears and engines used to life the bridge for ships to go under. 

When you get your ticket to the Tower bridge you can get a joint Tower Bridge Monument ticket which allows you access to the Monument built in memory of the great fire of London. 

The monument is the tallest freestanding column in the world. It is 311 steps to the top where you can enjoy a 360 view of London. 

When you get back down to the bottom of the monument you are handed a certificate stating you made it to the top of this iconic monument. 

If you are planning a trip to London and you love history I highly recommend getting the joint ticket to experience both the Tower Bridge tour and the Monument!
