Why Yes, Those are Breakable Ornaments on my Tree Even Though I Have Toddlers.

Sharing is caring!

Today is Day 4 in the HFTH Blog Hop (Read more about it Here) and the theme is Decorations!! Make sure to link up with us every day and use the hashtag #HFTHbloghop to share photos and posts on social media. That's right, today’s theme is Christmas Decor! For today's link up I will be linking up my post for Free 8x10 Chalkboard Christmas Art Prints.

When I was a little girl I dreamed of one day becoming a wife and a mother.

Because of this when other girls my age were collecting clothes and shoes, and makeup I was collecting books, bedding,  kitchenware, and home decor items. I didn't meet my husband until I was 26 so I had a long time to acquire things for my home. (nice things) When it came time for our first Christmas together I was soo excited to pull out and use for the first time the beautiful crimson and light gold class balls, crystal icicles, Angel tree topper, other ornaments and Christmas decor I had acquired.

My husband and I were soo happy with the beautiful results. However, when my family and friends saw my decorations that first year they all remarked on how beautiful they were, then warned us that we would have to enjoy it while we could, for next year there was no way we could use those decorations with a child in the house (I was pregnant at the time). They told us that if we didn't replace all my nice things with plastic that they would all be broken and lost.

I refused to accept this. I like to have nice things. I would rather have a few nice things than a whole house full of cheap crap. That which we surround ourselves with influence how we feel. Surround yourself with trash and you will start to feel trashy. Surround yourself with refinement and class and you will feel more refined and classy.

Rather than hide all my nice things away and replace it with cheap imitations I decided that I would take the time to teach my children how to appreciate and care for the beautiful things we have. Oh, I knew there was a distinct possibility that some of my treasured things would break. But really what is the point of having something if you aren't going to use it? Anyways I wanted my children to grow to love appreciate and properly care for nice things not be afraid of them when they grew older.

Thankfully not all my decorations are breakable or down low. Many are simple garland with white lights and little poinsettia flowers from Michaels.  of the breakable decorations in the 6 years and 3 kids later I have only lost 4 ornaments (3 glass balls and 1 crystal icicle) the last of which I actually dropped and broke last year(good thing I had bought extras), and the head had been knocked off my nutcracker requiring me to glue it back but that's not bad for 6 years and 3 rambunctious kids. The first few days I have found it necessary to be more vigilant with the youngest reminding them that we look and don't touch. after that I have found that I don't really have a problem.

One of these years I am going to acquire a second tree with colored lights that I will put downstairs in our family rooms. We will decorate it with homemade ornaments (made out of gingerbread) and a popcorn wreath. That will be the family tree. But the main floor is my domain and will always have coordinating decorations. Hope you enjoyed the pictures of the Groves home 2015 Christmas main floor decorations.

What are your thoughts on Decorating with little children in the house?

  1. I'm still in the process of building up my collection of Christmas decor, and since I plan on adopting older children I think I'll be able to get away with having nice decor with kids.

    1. I don't think I will ever be fully done collecting Christmas decor. Every year I find or make new decorations.
