Tutorial: Cheep & Easy Kids Theater Curtains Made From Old Sheets!

Sharing is caring!

I wanted to make my children  a simple curtain backdrop for them to use, to create a feeling of a stage, when they wanted to put on performances for the rest of our family.

I decided to make one out of a old flat sheet and a shower curtain tension rod which would be easy to take down and put away when not in use. While I liked the idea that this sort of curtain backdrop could be put up in various places around the house (like doorways, stairs and alcoves) I particularly wanted to make sure the curtain would work in the built in Entertainment center in our downstairs  living room where our TV is mounted. (which is much shorter and wider than a traditional doorway.)

Below is the tutorial for how I made it.

Items Needed:

1 Flat Sheet

Scissors (or cutting mat & rotary cutter)

Sewing Machine

Tension curtain Rod

Directions:

To make sure the curtain would be wide enough I chose to used one of our old Queen sized flat sheets (I figured that it would just be extra gathered if we chose to ever put it up in one of our doorways.) I then measured the height of the entertainment center alcove (60") and added 4" (For the tube that the curtain rod to go through) to determine the height to cut the curtain.

Cutting Sheet to Make a theater curtain (DIY)

After cutting the sheet to 64" (I cut the unneeded portion from the bottom of the sheet so that the beautifully finished top end of the sheet would become the bottom hemmed seam of the curtain).

Hemming the side of the sheet turned curtain (DIY)

I then cut the sheet in half length wise to make two panels.  Using the sewing machine I hemmed the cut side seams.

Sewng raw/cut top edge of sheet to make tube for curtain rod (DIY)

Lastly I on each pane l folded the top (raw/cut) edge down 4" and sewed near the bottom edge to make the tube for the curtain rod.

Kids love the Theater curtain backdrop

And Ta-Da You are finished! with just  2 cuts and 4 sewn seams You have a gorgeous theater curtain that your kids will love! Make sure to check out my article 5 Tips For Creating Your Own Family Theater Night!
