Pokemon Mystery Dungeon-Rescue Team DX Game REVIEW
(I received a complimentary Nintendo Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Game to facilitate this review. However, the views and opinions expressed are entirely my own. You can read my full disclosure here.)
Are you looking into getting the Mystery Dungeon- Rescue Team?
As you might know our kids, much like many others, are obsessed with Pokemon. As I will attest from our Pokemon Sword/Shield review. Where those games were great for my older kids, one who is active in trainer battles, and has dealt me- a veteran player, many loses, and the other who, much like myself, simply loves to collect them all. My youngest child who is 5, and is now starting to read, he finds this game more in his lane. The simple structure and easy to pick up and play, more to his liking.

Pokemon MD-RTDX, is a remake of the Mystery Dungeon Team Red/Blue games that originally appeared on Nintendo Gameboy Advance back in 2005. Gone are the Pixelated Pokemon and are replaced with beautiful cel-shaded characters, with vibrant brush strokes, that are surrounded by equally magnificent looking backgrounds full of lush and differing environments. The game also includes more and varied Pokemon from multiple generations, totally over 400.

This new game lets you play as the actual pokemon, and not a 10-year-old trainer, from the main series of games. You choose from one of 15 starter pokemon, including many fan favorites such as Pikachu, Eevee, Charmander, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Meowth, Cubone, Psyduck, Mudkip, Cyndaquil, among several others. After choosing your Pokemon you get to select one of the remaining Pokemon to be your buddy to assist you in your journey and adventures. You are tasked with leading a team of pokemon into dungeons, with the goal of saving other missing pokemon. Along the way you will battle other pokemon. This game plays as an action-RPG-dungeon crawler. As a Pokemon Rescue Team, you will be tasked with helping find and save other Pokemon lost in the Mystery Dungeons. Along the way, other pokemon will join you and assist you in completing your quests. The story is told with adorable illustrations of each Pokemon reacting to the story.

The game makes it easy for kids to play. The story is conveyed in word boxes instead of voice over, so younger players who have yet to read might find it difficult to follow along or understand. The game slowly walks you through the basics. You only control your main Pokemon at a time, so even though you might have a team of four or more, you only have to worry about what moves you are going to use for your initial Pokemon, unless they faint and your friend takes over, and you play as them. They allow for an auto exploration, which ends once you engage or enter a battle. You can link moves together, to speed up the battle. Along with traditional Pokemon games, your characters can and will level up, making them stronger and able to fight tougher Pokemon. After completing quests you will be rewarded with items that will help you along your journey.
BITE SIZE QUESTS
The Dungeons are simple corridors that lead into larger rooms, usually filled with both items, enemy Pokemon, or Pokemon in need of saving. Dungeons can last anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 minutes depending on how many quests or how thorough you are. The Pokemon do have a stamina bar and once it runs out you will need to switch out or leave so as to not risk losing money. The music is very enjoyable and reflects each unique area giving each a distinct mood and atmosphere.
PLAY ONLINE
The game also allows you to play with others and friends and other features are open online (though a Nintendo Online Subscription is required).
CONCLUSION
Where other recent Pokemon games are more in-depth when it comes to customization, strategy, and complexity, this one is refreshingly simple for younger kids and players that want just a nice relaxing time, with gameplay that is easy to pick and put down for quick moments. This game is also available through the Nintendo E-shop so you can get it for your kids right now to keep them entertained during this time of social distancing without ever leaving your home.
