Have you ever wanted to make your own homemade flour tortillas?

Some of our favorite family dishes use tortillas. From tacos to quesadillas to fajitas and burritos. Because of this, I have been wanting to learn how to make my own flour tortillas and corn tortillas for a while.

I had been told that making tortillas is actually pretty easy. Especially when you have the right tools. (aka a tortilla press) and flat pan to cook them.
With all the crazy happening in the world right now my husband has been on a self-reliance kick and thought it would be a good idea for us to finally get a tortilla press and learn how to make tortillas.

I got my cast iron tortilla press from UnoCasa and it arrived this week. The press is pre-seasoned but comes with seasoning instructions to keep it from rusting and in top condition for endless uses. It also comes with 100 precut sheets of parchment paper and a QR code for a free ebook recipe book. (since you can make more than just tortillas with this press.)

Flour tortillas have the same standard ingredients of Flour, Salt, Oil & Water. However, the amounts vary from recipe to recipe. Uno Casa has a good standard flour tortilla recipe on their site *If you want smaller taco-sized tortillas divide the dough into 16 sections instead of the 12 recommended in this recipe! In this case, you want to be careful about what kind of oil you use. Some oils have a strong taste that carries over into your dough. I would recommend using vegetable oil for your flour tortillas. Yes, you can hand roll out your tortillas, but it really adds to the work. Additionally, when you hand roll tortillas it is harder to get the desired thinness or shape and your tortilla is more likely to tear. I love my press from Uno Casa. It is totally affordable and made in quality cast iron in the traditional Mexican When you use your Tortilla Press you want to place your dough between two sheets of parchment paper. This will keep your tortilla from sticking to your press and tearing. This is especially important when making corn tortillas. While technically you can use any pan to cook your tortillas, you will get the best results using either a ceramic tortilla warmer in the oven or a cast-iron skillet on your stovetop. When cooking your tortilla should puff up slightly and run lightly brown in spots to let you know its done. Tips for making flour tortillas

My kids came in the kitchen when I was making my first batch of tortillas and after watching me press the first tortilla, they insisted on doing the rest while I just cooked them up. It turned into a fun family cooking affair.

After I finished the tortillas I whipped up Italian chicken filling using my chicken fajitas recipe here. They were a big hit for the whole family!
