Looking for fun Family Friendly things to do in Scottsdale, Arizona?

Recently my family visited Arizona for a family wedding in Mesa. After the wedding celebrations, we decided to extend our trip and check out Scottsdale which was right next door and we had heard that there were a ton of family friendly things to do in Scottsdale and we wanted to check them out.

Unfortunately, both my husband and 5-year-old son came down with a nasty flu bug (that was going around) right after arriving which kept us from doing everything we would have wanted. However, what we were able to go see and do were so awesome we are already planning a return trip so we can experience more (hopefully with no one getting sick this time).

Thankfully Scottsdale is known for its amazing Resorts and the one we were booked at (Check out our review of The Embassy Suites by Hilton Resort here) was the perfect place for my Husband and Son to recover at and the rest of our family to relax at during our down times.

This trip our top 3 places we went were:

The museum of the west

This was such a fun museum to go to  with my oldest and youngest (I wish my husband and son could have checked it out with us. Maybe next time.)  The second floor of the Museum of the West was dedicated to gorgeous western artwork and Indian artifacts.

After we checked out the second floor, we headed back downstairs to next check out the many Old West exhibits. I loved seeing the fun Old west clothing,  and accessories.

My son loved the kid's area where they had a fun table with little western people and animal figures to play with.

My daughter spent forever happily doing crayon rubbings.

They even had a fun spot where if we stood just right and had someone take a picture it looked like we were actually in the photo.

Our last stop in the museum was their section on the Old West in the movies. they had cool western movie posters all over the walls with fun facts.  My daughter loved walking the red carpet while my son pretended to be a part of the paparazzi and last of all they had this huge light table with lots of western silhouettes to trace and make pictures with.

All in all such a cool Museum to spend hours exploring as a family.

Shopping downtown

If there is one thing that Scottsdale is practically famous for (in addition to its amazing resorts) its shopping. There are soo many shopping opportunities from high-end fashion shopping to unique boutiques.

While sadly I didn't have the time this visit to delve into the world of fantastic shopping I was able to steal a few hours away to explore Scottsdale Old Town.

I loved stepping back in time while visiting the Old Mission and blacksmith before going to check out the many fun boutiques and shops available to explore.

Next time I visit Scottsdale, I intend to check out their fashion district and really have fun shopping.

McCormick Stillman Railroad Park

Thankfully by the end of our second day in Scottsdale, my son was finally feeling better so I was able to let my husband rest back at the resort while I bravely took all three kids by myself to go visit the local McCormick Stillman Railroad Park. I was assured that my kids would LOVE it there and that I should set aside several hours for family fun.

Unfortunately, by the time we were able to head over there the actual museum at the railroad park was already closed. However, there was still plenty to do with the kids.
We spent an hour going back and forth between riding the train around the park and enjoying going around the carousel.
After the kids had enough fun with the rides we went over to the fun playground at the railroad park where the kids played their hearts out until the sun started to go down.
Then before heading back to our resort, we went over to the smaller play area (made to look like an old west adobe town) and the kids played until dark.
We could have easily spent hours more enjoying the park which I had to promise the kids to get them to actually leave.
Depending on how old your kids are and what time of year you visit there are lots of fun outdoor activities for the family to enjoy. I hear that they go all out over the winter holidays and in the Summer the resorts have tons of special deals as well. We will definitely have to come back.
