DIY Chinese New Year Napkins (with Foil Iron-on)
Did you know you can make custom Chinese New Year Napkins with Iron-on?

As you know Chinese New Year is just around the corner. I love celebrating with my family for it's a great way to expose my children to the culture and beliefs of other people we share this world with. Since my husband and I are going to be out of the country (our 10th Anniversary) during Chinese New Year we decided to celebrate before we left.
Part of the joy of throwing a party is having the right decorations to set the mood. I decided last minute to make some cool Year of the Pig New Years Decorations for the party with my trusty Cricut Maker and I Love Love Love how they turned out. For the decorations, I decided to go with classic Red and Gold with White as an accent color to make the other two pop. Since the party was a last minute thing I didn't have a lot of time to design or make anything. Thankfully Cricut Design Space already had cool designs in their Cricut access for Chinese New Year that I was able to easily use and modify to fit what I wanted.
I loved how the old foil Iron-on looked on the Red Cardstock Banner I made (get DIY instructions here) so much I decided to put it on red napkins to make them pop. Adding a custom design to paper napkins is super easy with Iron-on and looks fantastic with foil Iron-on.
For those who wish to make these adorable custom napkins for another Chinese New Year Zodiac, I have included in this post the canvas links for all 12 of the Zodiacs.
Materials Needed:
- Cricut Maker (or other Cricut Cutting Machines that work with Design Space)
- Cricut Design Space Canvas for your desired Chinese New Year Napkins (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.)
- 12 x12 Standard Grip Mat
- Fine Point Blade
- Cricut Essentials Tool Kit
- Gold Foil Iron-on
- 1 pkg of red party-sized paper napkins.
- 6x7 Easypress 2 & Mat
Instructions:
- Open Design Space Canvas for Chinese New Year Napkins --> (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.)
- Click Mirror Image and select Foil Iron-on as material to cut.
- Place Iron-on shiny side (colored side) down toward the mat. and insert into the Cricut to cut.
- After cutting use the weeding tool to weed out unneeded iron-on.
- Heat the Easypress 2 to 270 and set time for 30 seconds.
- Place the Cut Iron-on design on the center of each napkin, then press with the Easypress 2 (using the easy press mat underneath) with firm pressure for 30 seconds.
- Then peel off the protective backing off the iron on (Cricut recommends letting it cool first for a “cold peel”)
Everyone raved about these napkins at the party. Not only did they look super cool, but they were soft to the touch since Iron-on totally melds to the surface they are added to. If you want to wow your guests this is the way to do it.
