Have you ever wanted to Customize a Throw Blanket?

Taking the time to take care of yourself is not being vain or selfish. Rather it is being smart. If we don’t take care of ourselves, how will be able to continue taking care of our loved ones? When I was asked what advice I would give to other women about Self Care I recommended to 15 minutes for yourself every day. Even if that means getting up 15 minutes before your kids wake up. Or staying up 15 minutes after they go to bed to get it. There is a lot of things you can do in even 15 minutes to fill your inner well. My favorite thing to do is to snuggle in a soft throw blanket and delve into a good book. (You can check out my 25 ways to love yourself this year for ideas.)
Speaking of throw blankets…Though I have several plushy ones around my home, I like to also carry a lightweight cotton blanket with me to Church and other places that I might get chilled. For my Self Care Blog Tour project, I thought it would be fun to show how easy it is to customize a throw blanket with Cricut Iron-On (Heat Transfer Vinyl.)

I debated doing a smaller design like a monogram or cute design for one corner of my blanket (which would have been way easier to photograph, but decided to do something a bit bigger. I decided I wanted a fun fillagree for each corner with the phrase Once Upon A Time… across the bottom of the blanket. After all, my favorite stories have always been (and probably will always be) Fairytales. I love how it turned out. So did my daughter. When she saw my finished project she practically claimed it for herself. (I may have to get another one for me.)
Materials Needed:
- Cricut Explore Air 2 (or other Cricut Cutting Machines that work with Design Space)
- Cricut Design Space Canvas (ready to make it now)
- Strong Grip Mat
- Fine Point Blade
- Essential Tool Kit
- 4 rolls of Cricut’s Black Iron On (2 if you are willing to use pieced together scraps for half the corners like I did)
- 1 Roll of Cricut’s Gold Glitter Iron On
- 1 Throw Blanket (the one I used was a simple lightweight 53″ cotton throw with a serged edge.)
- Iron (or better yet Easy Press)
- Iron On Protective Sheet

Instructions:
- Access my Cricut Design Space Canvas for my Embellished Corners/ Once Upon a Time Design. **This design is sized for a 53″ x 53″ Blanket. If your throw is a different size you will have to adjust the size accordingly.

- Click the Make it Button and make sure to click the mirror image button for all the mats.

- Set your Cricut machine to Iron On setting for the regular black Iron-on on sheets and Custom (selecting Glitter Iron-on on your desktop for custom materials) for the Gold Glitter Iron-On.
- Load the Iron on onto your Strong Grip Mat Shiny Side down, then load the mat and start cutting.

- After the Cricut is finished cutting your fest mat, carefully cut off excess Iron-on to use for second mat or future projects. Then Weed the cut design using your weeding tool.

- Carefully place the Iron on onto you preheated blanket (where you want it)

- Using an Iron (or Easy Press) and the Iron-on Protective sheet (heated according to the prescribed heat setting marked on the Iron-on wrapper) Press firmly to adhere the Iron-On to the fabric.

- I started with each of the corners, then did the text last. * You know that you have heated the iron on enough when the clear plastic baking peels easily away leaving the Iron-on fused to the blanket.

Yes, it’s that simple!
I loved customizing my throw blanket. I can’t help but smile each time I am curled up in it (or see my daughter curled up in it) and read Once Upon A Time. With how easy this was to do I am going to have to do this to more blankets. I think my next throw I will do a simple monogram in one corner…
