How to Make Your Own Moon Sand

Sharing is caring!

Did you know that Moon Sand is VERY easy to make?

It is quite the interesting substance that makes for the perfect sensory play time experience. Moon sand is super soft. It's like playing with moldable clouds. And yet if you apply even a tiny bit of pressure, then it all falls loosely flat again. Really it is such a fun substance to play with.

Ingredients:

  • 8 Cups of All Purpose Flour
  • 1 Cup of Baby Oil

Instructions:

  • Add the baby oil to the flour
  • Mix thoroughly

Yeah, I know, this is the easiest recipe in the world. and the result was hours of fun for my kids. Now as a warning, this stuff can be very messy. Also, even though Moon sand doesn't feel greasy, it has oil in it so keep that in mind for where you have your kids play with it. You probably don't want your kids tracking it through the house. If you are worried about making a mess inside you can always have your kids play with their moons and on cookie trays outside like I did.

**The first time I made this my kids asked for me to make it in fun colors. I tried by adding food coloring to the mixture hoping to color the moon sand but it did do much the food coloring just beaded up in the sand which absorbed it. Truthfully, I liked the moon sand in its white color anyways it looked more like one would imagine moon sand would look. If you want to color your moon sand, maybe you should try mixing the food coloring with the oil before adding it to the flour. I think that would work better.
