10 Kids Books Every Home Should Have

Are you looking for recommendations for great Kids Books?

I recently had a friend ask me if I had any favorite kids books that I could recommend for her young kids. Books that the kids would enjoy and learn from. 

She knew that I am an avid book reader and figured that I would have some favorite little kid books. She was right. I have a shelf dedicated to my favorite little kid books, and each of my kids has a shelf in their rooms as well.

Here is a list of my absolute favorite kid's books that every home with little kids should have.

Seven silly eaters1- The Seven Silly Eaters

by Mary Ann Hoberman (Author)& Marla Frazee (Illustrator)   

This book is about a family of picky eaters. Each of the Peter children had to have a special meal made a certain way each day or they wouldn't eat, and in many instances would have a fit. None of the children realized how much work they were demanding their mother go through on their behalf each day...until they decide to each make their mother their favorite dish as a birthday gift.  --> Buy it Here <--

Skippy Jon Jones4- Skippyjon Jones

I Love this fun and an imaginative book of a Siamese cat that thinks its a bandit fighting Chihuahua named El Skippito. With a sprinkling of Spanish or (or Spanglish), this book is a fun way to introduce your kids to another language and culture. As an added bonus it is hilarious.  --> Buy it HERE <--

The Day Jimmys Boa Ate The Wash5- The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash

Like many, I was first introduced to this book via Reading Rainbow when it was read on air by LeVar Burton. This book is a classic cause and effect book of what happens when Jimmy innocently takes his pet boa with him on a class field trip to a farm. 6- Animalia

This is such a fun book to introduce the alphabet to your children... The illustrations are amazing and your kids will find hours of fun trying to find all the hidden items that start with each letter as well as the boy hidden within each page. --> Buy it HERE <--

I aint gonna paint no more7- I Ain't Gonna Paint No More!

This is a fun and wildly colorful story of a little boy can't help spreading his goopy colorful pain everywhere (especially himself) it is to the tune of "it Ain't gonna rain no more" and though it might give your child an idea or two that you will have to quickly nip in the bud it is soooo fun that you won't mind. --> Buy it HERE <--

you are special8- You Are Special

I love this beautiful tale of Punchinello a small wooden person (or Wemmick) who learns that his value isn't determined by how many Star stickers or Dot stickers he is given by the other little wooden people. The sneetches9- The Sneetches and Other Stories

This is probably one of my favorite Dr. Seuss book.  Here you have two kinds of Sneetches. One with stars and one without. Because of this distinction, the group who had stars thought they were better than the ones without.  Tired of being how they were being treated, the starless Sneetches were the perfect prey for a starveling salesman with a special machine that would change the status quo...  --> Buy it HERE <--

Where the wild things are10- Where The Wild Things Are

This is the story of a little boy with  quite the Wild imagination.  (Please don't just this book based off of that horrible movie by the same name.) This is a book about innocence and childhood imagination. --> Buy it HERE <--

Reading aloud to your children while they are young has many benefits. Just to name a few is the binding between parent and child, the increased attention span (and correspondingly their increased ability to sit still for long periods of time), increases imagination and creativity,  and sets up a pattern for a love of learning.

  2. What an excellent list of books Julia! I loved Dr Seuss as a kid, and had many of their books. I was actually upset when my parent's basement flooded a while back and my books were destroyed. Silly me for leaving them there to begin with 🙂

  4. Those are some great books. I would add Bridge To Terabithia to that list, too, for kids who are a little older. That was always my favorite book as a child.

    1. Thanks. We have tons of books in our house, but as far as little kid's books go these are bay far my favorite.

  11. I haven't heard any of these books except Where the Wild Things are and Dr. Seuss. I love Dr. Seuss books and I think every kid should read them 🙂

    1. I believe its important to have great books that teach good things and inspire the imagination in children in your home. Many of these books I had collected long before I had children of my own.

    1. I know...right. Way to go Hollywood. What were they thinking?!? Hey why don't we take a perfectly innocent kids books and turn it into a dark creepy movie overrun with psychobabble...

  13. I never thought of homeschooling my kids because I don't think I can manage it. But these books are great regardless if your kids are homeschooled or not.

    1. Agreed. I think these books should be in every home. They teach great lessons and spark the imaginations of children.

  17. This is actually a pretty great list. My grandchildren have a few of these books already. I might have to get them some of the ones you recommended. They sound like great books.

  18. Another one of my favorites is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! I'll bet your kids would like that one too.

  21. These are all good. I really like "Rosie Revere, Engineer." Awesome book for kids self-esteem and to teach them not to give up!

  22. You don't have the apple! It's a wordless book that you follow with pictures and you can have SO MUCH fun with it . 🙂 Some good books you have listed here.
