Need fun printable signs for your back to school kids pictures?

Over the last few years, it has become an increasingly popular tradition among many parents to take back to school pictures where their kids hold up printable signs stating what grade they will be going into that year. I love this tradition. I think it is a super cute idea and I love these pictures way better than any of the school pictures I have ever seen. These back to school pictures are a fun way to not only get more pictures for your family photo album but to also get your kids excited to be going back to school. I even know of a bunch of homeschool parents who do this.

5 FREE Back to School Printable Sign Sets

I was having fun in illustrator today and designed 5 different back to school sign designs. Three of the designs are in the now popular Black chalkboard style with white or colorful writing and design elements and two are in color. All the printables are in PDF format on 8.5 x 11-inch paper. They are ready to print (at home or at a local copy center) and use. If you are looking for a good color printer to print these and other printables throughout the year I highly recommend the Canon MG7720 Wireless All-In-One Printer with Scanner and Copier (I love mine and even use it with my Cricut to do Print & Cut projects): You can get the printer here on Amazon.

**It was brought to my attention that I accidentally misspelled Kindergarten on the signs. I am totally embarrassed and have fixed the signs so that the error is corrected.

    1. Seriously? I am soo sorry. I will fix them right away. I was working on them in illustrator with my kids hanging around and there is no spell check. Thanks for catching that.

  4. I've tried to download the colorful chalkboard designs, but I download the converter and then can't find what to do next. Please help.

    1. They should be ready to print PDF files. If you can't open pdf's on your computer you can download Adobe reader for free to do so. You can get it here: https://get.adobe.com/reader/

      All copy centers can open PDF files as well to print.

  7. Thanks for sharing these, I used the simple black/white chalkboard ones yesterday and had so many compliments on it! Is there a way that you could also do a "Last Day" in the same formats? I would love to have the same format to be able to put the pictures side-by-side. Thanks so much again for sharing these!

  9. Hi Julia! Just coming across this post. I'm in California, and here we have Transitional Kindergarten. I love these signs, but I can't use them! Would it be possible to get an editable version? Or add "Transitional Kindergarten" or simply "TK" if it doesn't fit? Thank you so much!

  11. Is there any chance you would be able to make one that says First Day of Grade 2/3? I'm teaching a combined class this year and I would love it in either the first or second design you have posted. Thanks!!

  12. I downloaded and printed the First day chalkboard rainbow dot version. On the Kindergarten page only the word "Kindergarten" shows in the red dot (center top) and the whole thing is a bit off center. Is there any chance you would be willing to adjust it a bit?
    PS- You ROCK for sharing your creative talent with the rest of us for free! Even if you don't have time to make this edit I still really appreciate this website!

  15. These are lovely! Would it be possible to add a first and last day of 'Grade R' please. I'm from South Africa and our kindergarten year is called Grade R. I would really appreciate it.

  16. Is there one in the rainbow dot that says Stop Crying Mom? I would like that one to match the first day of preschool in rainbow dot.

    1. Each design comes as a ready to Print PDF file with all 14 signs (pre-K through 12th grade) After you download the file you just select which page you want to print.

      1. I was just wondering if there was a sign that said Preschool instead of pre-K. If not, no worries. This is the 3rd year that I use your signs for my oldest son (pre-K, Kinder, and 1st Grade last week), and my littlest is about to start preschool. Thank you for making all these signs, they're all so cute 🙂
