DIY Patriotic Candy Dishes

Sharing is caring!

These DIY Patriotic Candy Dishes are super easy to make with a bit of acrylic paint!

Today and tomorrow I am teaming up with some other crafty bloggers to bring you fun patriotic DIY projects you can do at home. For my project, I wanted to do something fun, yet simple. I went to the dollar store for some inspiration and found these adorable square votive candle holders and had the inspiration to decorate them with acrylic paint to use as patriotic candy holders for my father-in-law who is obsessed with anything Red, White & Blue.

Yield: 3 Candy Dishes

Turn simple dollar store glass votives into fun patriotic candy dishes with a bit of acrylic paint.

Materials

  • Glass Votive Candle Holders
  • Red, White & Blue Acrylic Paint

Tools

  • Paint brushes
  • Toothbrush

Instructions

Remove the bottom sticker tags from the glass votives.

Paint evenly with acrylic paint. (One blue, one red & one white.)

Let fully dry & then carefully paint the second coat of paint (Repete for 3rd coat if needed just be careful to let the paint fully dry between coats and paint gently to avoid pulling lower layers of paint off the glass)

Use a toothbrush to speckle the painted glass with contrasting paint. (I did white on the red and blue glasses and a combination of red and blue on the white)

Let the paint fully dry and fill dishes with your favorite Red, White & Blue candy (I chose saltwater taffy)

Notes

To make painting the glass votives easier we placed plastic cups inside the upside-down votives. This lifted the votives enough to make it possible to fully paint all 4 sides without having to hold the votives in our hands. It also made it so the votives could dry without potentially sticking to the paper plates we painting them over.

I really love how these candy dishes turned out. I think the splattered paint really adds to the finished look of the candy dishes. I think I'll do this again with some other colors (after all the glass dishes are from the dollar store. I think next I'll make a little stand to put them on.

The best thing is these candy dishes can also be used as candle holders, utensil holders, or even use them for small potted plants. Don't you just love multi-functional items?
