Easy DIY Thumbtack Dragon Egg

Sharing is caring!

Are you ready to make your own Thumbtack Dragon Egg?

Several months ago my sister and I decided we were going to make our own Dragon Eggs to decorate our home (yes we both love Harry Potter as you could tell with all the fun HP DIY I have on my blog.) So we looked online and found the perfect size Styrofoam Eggs to use as our base and then we got to brainstorming how we wanted to make our eggs. My sister decided that she wanted to make a Thumbtack Dragon Egg (I’ll show you how I decided to make my eggs later in this post) and her first egg turned out soo amazing that I had to share the easy tutorial with you.

Making Dragon Eggs with Thumbtacks is actually very easy. However, I must warn you it is time-consuming since it takes several hundred thumbtacks to do one egg. However, if you have the time, the results are simply amazing. You can make your own Thumbtack Dragon Egg following the step by step tutorial below. Or you can pin this post to your DIY Pinterest Board to make later.

Yield: 1 Dragon Egg

Are you wanting to learn how to make your own epic Thumbtack Dragon Egg? They are actually quite easy to make. Check out my tutorial to learn how.

Tools

  • Elmers Glue

Instructions

Dip the end of the thumbtack into Elmer's glue and carefully stick into Styrofoam Eggs.

Start in the middle of the top of your styrofoam egg, and then work your way down in circles,

Overlap PIns for full coverage until Egg is completely covered.

Notes

  • If a pin pushes itself out, it means the angle was wrong. Just remove it and try again with the tip pointing in and down.
  • The pins can be manipulated a bit if you need to undo one partway to make it overlap with the last one in the circle, or if you need to move it a hair to one side.
  • If it doesn't cover the gap as you intended, take it out, re-glue it, and sick it in where you want it but ideally not in the exact same hole.
  • It doesn't have to be in perfect rows, in fact, it wouldn't look as natural if it was, so just go for general rows and you work your way around and down.
  • It takes around 5 containers of pins and a couple of hours to complete. My first egg took about 1550 pins, but my second egg (when I was better at my placement) is taking closer to 1300 pins.

I really do love how this egg turned out. It looks like something you would find in an actual dragon nest straight out of your favorite fantasy story.

Remember how I mentioned that my sister and I decided to make our eggs with different materials? While my sister made these thumbtack eggs, I decided to make my eggs with Faux Leather with foil Iron-on accents using my Cricut Maker. (Get the tutorial HERE)

I love how both eggs turned out so I think after I make a few Faux Leather eggs in different colors, I think I will make a couple of these Thumb Tack eggs to make a fun assorted collection.
