How to Throw an Indoor Luau Party

Sharing is caring!

Are you looking to throw a Luau party this Summer?

Summer is here bringing with it hot sunny days perfect for throwing a fun Luau party. However, weather can be unpredictable causing you to have to change your plans and bring your party indoors. That is what happened to us this last weekend. I had planned a fun outdoor luau for my extended family when the weather abruptly turned cold and windy right before I was to set up causing me to have to change plans and bring everything inside.

When my mother saw my frustration, she told me that even in Hawaii (where she grew up) they now more often than not have luaus partial indoors or in pavilions in case of random rainstorms. Thankfully, I was able to bring the outdoor luau magic indoors with ease thanks to the fun decorations, place settings and luau accessories I got from Oriental Trading Company for this party.

We decided to set up the dining room table for the kids to eat at.  To make the table setting tropical in color I chose blue plastic table cloths, Yellow Paper Cups, Yellow Square Dinner Plates & Lime Green Napkins. For the adults, I set out more of the plates, cups, and napkins on the counter for them to grab their food and take it to eat in the living room.

For the table decorations, I used flowers and palm leaves from the Luau Hibiscus Decorating Kit along with 2 sets of Table Tikki Torches. Even unlit they looked pretty sweet.

Originally I was thinking of getting a Tikki Head Pinata for the kids, but instead, I just ordered fun party favors that I set at each place setting for the kids to enjoy after eating. These party favors were a hit! The shrieks of laughter from the kids while playing with them (while we adults had fun chatting after the meal) was priceless.

Next, I transformed our main kitchen counter into a Tikki stand for all the party food. I did this by placing a folded blue plastic table cloth on the counter and a grass table skirt around the counter. Then on the wall and cabinets above the counter, I taped up the lei garlands that came in the luau Hibiscus Decoration kit along with some of the large leaves and flowers, placing the rest on the countertop under and around the food platers. For the final decorative touch to the tiki stand food counter I placed the set of hibiscus table top cutouts I had leftover from a luau I did a couple of years ago.

For the genal decorations, we hung up a surfboard backdrop against the wall next to the table and then hung some more flower lei garlands.

For the food, we made meat kabobs and rice. The chicken and beef were marinated in our Hawaiian style Teriyaki sauce (get the recipe here) and the shrimp were cooked in butter and garlic.

We also used these cute Tiki Fruit Kabob Skewers to make delicious Fruit Kabobs with Strawberries, Grapes, and Blueberries and Blackberries.

For the kids, we made pigs in a blanket made with little smokies and Croissant dough. (they are super easy to make and were a big hit).

As the final touch for the party, we had Adult Flowered Hula Skirts, Kids Flowered Hula Skirts, and Flower leis for everyone to wear when they arrived.

So in the end even though we had to adjust our plans to bring our luau inside this year, thanks to all the great stuff I got from Oriental Trading Company to throw the luau it still looked amazing and everyone had a blast.
