Summer Fun With DIY Personalized Water Blasters

Sharing is caring!

Water Blasters are really the perfect activity to get your kids outside on a hot summer day.

This month’s Inspire My Creativity Link up’s theme is Kids Activities or Crafts. When thinking of kid’s activities for the Summer months I wanted something to get my kids outside. Knowing my kids, I knew the activity had to be water related. So I headed over to the Dollar Store for some inexpensive inspiration. Normally I get my kid’s water guns each year. They are fun and even better cheap (so I don’t freak out when they break.)  The only problem is that when using them, my kids are constantly running inside to fill the guns back up. I tried to set a buck of water outside and tell my kids to just hold the guns under water till they filled up, but that didn’t work as well as I would like.

This year I was hoping to find something better and guess what I totally did. I noticed our dollar store had these cool little kid-sized water blasters.  With the shape of a gun but the easy water filling ability of a water soaker I knew it would be perfect for my kids. The was just one problem…They only came in two colors but I have 3 kids.
I could already hear their complaints that so and so has my gun running through my head when I thought up a solution. Using my Cricut and holographic vinyl (which I had some scraps left over from when I made the bug catcher kits) that I could use to make labels for each gun! I know… GENIUS…Right?!?
The Designs are small to fit the side of the blaster’s barrel. I wanted it close to the handle so it wouldn’t get wet when the kids filled their guns. My husband suggested instead of putting their full names to do their first initial with a cool design. This was perfect for even my 3-year-old recognizes the first letter of his name.
After making the designs in Cricut Design Space, this project only took a few minutes to do and the kids LOVED how they turned out and begged to go outside to use them right away. The best part is that it has been a week now and there hasn’t been a single argument over whose blaster is whose. #MomWin!!!

Materials Needed:

If you need to order any of these supplies from Cricut.com use Promo Code: QUIETGROVE to get 10% off + free shipping!!

**Note this code does not work on Design Space Access, digital content, machines, EasyPress, Brightpad

Instructions:

  • Change out the Initial in the middle of each design.
  • Set your Cricut to custom and select holographic vinyl from the custom materials list.

  • Load your vinyl on a standard grip mat and get cutting. **Thankfully the Cricut has no problem cutting small intricate designs.
  • Trim off excess vinyl (I use the paper trimmer from my essentials toolkit)  for future use and then use your weeding tool  (in the essential toolkit) weed the unneeded vinyl from your design.

  • Cut a small piece of transfer tape (the size of your design) and press over weeded vinyl (I use the scraper tool from the essential toolkit to do this).

  • Peel off Vinyl back (transferring your vinyl to the transfer tape)

  • Press onto the Blaster’s barrel where you want it and carefully peel off transfer tape leaving your vinyl design on the blaster.
Like I said using vinyl to customize your kid’s water blasters will only take a few minutes but is well worth it for hours of drama free fun in the sun.
To use I just found some spare buckets that were lying around the house and filled the with water then placed them in different spots in our front yard then let the kids have their water war. They had sooo much wet wild fun and it used way less water than a pool or sprinkler would have.
If my kids ever get tired of just shooting at each other (which I don’t see happening any time soon) then I’ll pull out their plastic figures and dinosaurs and have them do target shooting with their blasters.
I am so excited to share with you my tutorial for personalizing water blasters for your kids as part of the Inspire My Creativity Monthly Link Party that I will be co-hosting along with some of my favorite fellow crafty bloggers on the 2nd Wednesday of each month! Make sure to check out the other great Kids Activities and Craft projects for this months link up (found at the end of the post) and don’t forget to share your own projects with us.

My kids have been out side playing in the water almost every day this summer. I think they need these. And personalizing them helps keep fighting over the gun at bay.

I am all about activities that get the kids outside. Too much inside and we all go crazy.
