On a very recent trip to San Diego, I was able to take my young family to visit Sea World for the first time. With how much my children LOVE sea life (especially after living so near the ocean for the last several months while traveling through Europe.) I knew they would have a blast at Sea World. I have to say Sea World was waaay better than I even expected. We all loved seeing all the beautiful animals that reside at Sea World. I was also impressed to learn HOW they care for these animals and even assist in vital research which helps these same animals in the wild. If you are planning a family trip to San Diego I highly recommend including Sea World as one of the stops (did you know they even have a few rides there? As for the animal exhibits, some of our favorites were the Sharks, the Turtles, and the Penguins. We also loved watching the Killer Whale show. (they are such gorgeous creatures)
Now for the important part. If you are planning to take young kids to Sea World here are my Top #7 Tips for how to Survive your Sea World experience:
1-Grab a map! Yes, Sea Wold is large enough that they provide a map. If you forget to grab one then don't panic. Sea World has conveniently placed signs throughout the park offering directions. However, these can sometimes still be confusing due to how many exhibits and shows are available in every direction. Having a map also allows you to make a plan of what you want to go see/do first.
2-Arrive as close to opening as you can. This will allow you to take your time while going through this fun park with your kids. And let me tell you, both you and your kids will have a lot more fun and will hold up a lot better if you don't try to rush your Sea World trip. When you plan to make a day of it then you see no problem taking the zillion little shade, food, drink and bathroom breaks that your children will need in between the Animal exhibits and shows.
3-Bring lots of water and snacks for the family. While normally wewill have our kids carry their own drinks and snacks in their own travel bags, (you can learn how to set up a killer travel bag for your kids here.) for Sea world we opted to carry all the snacks and drinks (from our grab and go car kit) in my husband and my backpacks. This allowed our kids to be freer and have more fun at the park while still keeping the necessary food and drink on hand. Seriously if you do only one thing on this list PACK PLENTY OF SNACKS AND DRINKS! Hangry and dehydrated kids are NOT something you want to be dealing with while at Sea World. Remember you will be doing a lot of walking in the hot sun. Not only will your kids need to stay fed and hydrated, so will you.
4-Be aware of where all the Bathrooms in the park are located. (again this is why having the map comes in handy.) With all the snacking and drinking your kids will probably need to use the restroom a couple of times during your visit. This is just a reality of having young kids as every parent knows.
5-Take advantage of the Kids area at Sea World. Seriously, the Sesame Street Bay of Play is a lot of fun. When you start lagging for energy from herding your children from one exhibit to the next then head over to the Bay of Play and enjoy some shade while your kids have some fun. This will refresh everyone and make it easier to get back out there to see more shows and animals.
6- bring a stroller for your young ones. I prefer a lightweight easy to collapse small one because it can get into and around more places. If you don't want to bring your own you can totally rent one from Sea World. Trust me eventually your kids will get tired and a stroller will make all the difference in the world.
7-Try to always keep tabs on where your kids are at any given time. However, if you do loose your kids (which I hope does not happen to you EVER.) there is a Lost Kids place near the entrance of the park. I was told once a good idea before taking your kids to any public venue or event was to line them up and take a current photo with your phone of each kid before you leave. That way if the worst should happen you can show the authorities exactly what your kids look like and what they are wearing that day.
