Why Kindle Unlimited is your best friend during School Closures and Social Distancing

Sharing is caring!

Do you have Kindle Unlimited yet? Let me tell you why you should.

Right now across the United States, we are experiencing the National State of Emergency due to a viral Pandemic. schools, restaurants, places of entertainment are closing and where possible businesses are sending employees home to work remotely. In an effort to stop this pandemic from becoming as bad here as it is in other countries, everyone has been asked to practice social distance and if possible even self-quarantine. While all of this created a mass panic causing a run on stores for groceries and other household products like cleaning supplies and toilet paper, now, days later the biggest questions is, how do I entertain myself and my kids while stuck at home??? If you are like me, then the first thought that came to mind was catching up on reading. However, this can get a bit tricky with libraries closing as well.

While like many of you, I do prefer physical books, I also acknowledge the convenience of e-books. Why are e-books so great (and perfect for our current quarantined situation?

  • You can read e-books on your computer, Cell Phone, Tablet or E-reader
  • You can browse & buy all your e-books from the comfort and security of your own home.
  • You can store tons on e-books on your device at once (so you never run out of reading material.)
  • You can change the font size and font/background color to suit your needs.
  • E-readers save your current place in all the books you are reading.

Now that we have addressed how convenient ebooks are, now let's talk about where to get your ebooks.

1-Libraries:

Libraries are great for checking our ebooks doesn't cost you anything. You just need a current library card and an app on your device (to check out and read the books with). Different libraries use different apps so go to your library's website for specific instructions for how to set up to be able to borrow ebooks from your specific library.

The Downside to libraries is like with physical books they have to purchase each individual copy of each ebook they wish to lend out. So libraries have varying sized e-book libraries to lend out. Even more with all your neighbors being quarantined as well it can become hard to get the e-books you want to read.

2-Purchase Ebooks:

You can Purchase ebooks at various places. The main places to buy e-books are Amazon & Barns-N-Noble. They both have incredible selections available at decent prices. Additionally, if you are using an IOS device you can purchase ebooks through apple using the iBooks app. If you are using an Android there is Google Books.

The downside to buying ebooks is that the cost can stack up. Especially if you are buying for more than 1 person in your home.

3-Kindle Unlimited:

Kindle Unlimited is a subscription service offered by Amazon where for a set monthly fee you can check out up to 10 books at a time to read at a time.

Not every e-book out there is available on Kindle unlimited but they have a seriously vast library of books available ( 1 million books, thousands of audiobooks & magazines 1 million books, thousands of audiobooks & magazines) and best of all if it's a Kindle Unlimited book it is always available.

Even better, you can have up to 10 ebooks checked out at once! That means that if you log into your Amazon account on each of your kid's devices as well as your own you can all have your own book to read at the same time!
