8 Powerful Truths I hope my Children Learn From The Incredibles!
Yesterday I watched Disney's movie The Incredibles with my 3 year old for what seemed like the 1,000th.
This time as I sat watching the movie, I took note of some powerful truths found within that I hope my children will learn by watching this movie as often as they do. Here are 8 of my favorite:
1- Not Everyone Wants To Be Saved or can be Saved.
In the beginning of the movie Mr. Incredible foils the plan of a man attempting to end his life by jumping off a tall building. Was the man grateful for that last minute intervention? No He didn't want to be saved. He resented being saved. Even though he was still alive he wasn't really saved. And it was his choice. Its important to learn how to move on when you can't save someone.
2- Not Everyone Will Appreciate Your Special Gifts and Talents
The Incredibles learned in the beginning of this move, that while some will appreciate and respect your gifts and talents, other will resent your gifts and talents and you for possessing them. Mr. Incredible and Dash, teach us that we should never try to hide our gifts and talents to fit in.
3- If you want to have a successful Marriage and Family it takes sacrifices.
Helen: I love you, but if we're going to make this work, you have to be more than Mr. Incredible. You know that, don't you?
Priest: ...so long as you both shall live?
Bob: I do.
It take more than just two incredible people in love to make a marriage successful. It take constant Love, Service, Caring, Understanding, and a lot of Sacrifice.
4-If You are Having Problems With Your Marriage (or any important relationship.) Don't Give up. Confront the Problem. Fight! Win!
Helen: [sobbing] Now I'm losing him! What'll I do? What'll I do?
Edna: What are you talking about?
Helen: [stops crying] Huh?
Edna: [shouts] You are Elastigirl! My God...
[swatting Helen with a newspaper]
Edna: Pull-yourself-together! "What will you do?" Is this a question? You will show him you remember that he is Mr. Incredible, and you will remind him who *you* are. Well, you know where he is. Go, confront the problem. Fight! Win!
[normal voice]
Edna: And call me when you get back, darling. I enjoy our visits.
Like I mentioned in the point above, relationships take work. A lot of work. And often despite the love, you will still hit rough patches in your relationship. When this happens you can either give up or you can Fight.
5-Don't Get Stuck In The Past
As the wise Edna puts it, "I never look back, dahling. It distracts from the now."
How many of us miss out on what is right before us because we are blinded by the past? The past is great and all, but it is behind you for a reason.
6-When you lie you hurt everyone around you.
Mr. Incredible kept secrets from his wife which almost got them all killed. He had good intentions at first. Mr. Incredible didn't want his wife to worry when he lost his job. Then he was afraid of what she would say (that she would try to stop his doing super things which he loved so much) if she knew about his secret activities. Eventually, his actions put him in a position that he couldn't tell his wife. Lies are like that. They build and as they grow their potential to do greater harm grows.
7- Don't let Doubt or Fear Keep you from doing what you were born to do.
"Shhh. It isn't your fault. It wasn't fair for me to suddenly ask so much of you. But things are different now. And doubt is a luxury we can't afford anymore, sweetie. You have more power than you realize. Don't. Think. And don't worry! If the time comes, you'll know what to do. It's in your blood." -Mrs. Incredible to her daughter Violet
Fear and doubt are dangerous companions. Ones that we cannot afford if we are to accomplish all God would have of us. If only we truly understood who we really are (the offspring of God and Joint Heirs with Christ- Romans 8:16-17) it wouldn't be hard for us to have the sort of faith in ourselves and in God to cast out the fears and doubts that keep us from success.
8- No Matter How Powerful You Are, If you are Alone you Can Fall.
How Many Supers died on that island fighting those robots alone? It was only when the Incredible united and fought together as a family that they triumphed both on the island and later in the city. When we are united as a family we are way stronger and invincible than when we are alone.
Of course there were a lot more great truths found in this movie. These were just the ones that stood out the most yesterday As I watched with my son. The great thing about a classic is that you can go back to it over and over again and learn something each time.

I like all the tips! Especially #4 "f You are Having Problems With Your Marriage (or any important relationship.) Don’t Give up. Confront the Problem. Fight! Win!"
Never give up. There's always hope!
Thanks Jonathan, That was my favorite one too. I have seen too many marriages fall apart because they wouldn't fight for it. Yes some marriages are toxic and need to end, but most dont fit in that category.
