Need help organizing your kid’s Lego collection?

It is January, and every January on the heels of taking down our Christmas decorations, my husband and I both get the itch to organize and clean our home. One project that has been on our to-do list has been to find a better way to organize your kid’s Lego collection. We have a huge Lego collection and up until now, they have mostly been stored in two lego buckets and a few random boxes. (with some finished Lego sets on our kid’s Shelves.)

Every time the kids want to play with their legos they end up just dumping these buckets on their bedroom floor making a huge mess of tiny legos. I wanted to find a way to organize the legos by color so that it would be easier for my kids to find the legos they wanted while playing without feeling the need to dump them everywhere.

Since this month’s Inspire My Creativity challenge was a free for all I thought I would do a tutorial on how we finally organized our Legos. The first thing we did was look for containers. I wanted to get containers that were easy to stack (since we wanted to store them on top of our kid’s bookshelves). We found what we were looking for at the Container Store. They had clear shoebox sized buckets with clear lids for really cheap. All I needed to do was cut out some cute Lego Labels for each bucket. I actually cut each label twice (one for the end of each bucket and one for the side)

Materials Needed:
- Clear Plastic Shoebox storage boxes
- Cricut Maker (or other Cricut Cutting Machines that work with Design Space)
- SVG Cut Files for Lego Labels –>HERE<–
- Standard Grip Mats
- Fine Point Blade
- Cricut Essentials Tool Kit
- Cricut Vinyl (in Black, White, Yellow, Red, Green, & Blue)
- Transfer Tape
If you need to order any of these supplies from Cricut.com use Promo Code: TheQG10 to get 10% off + free shipping!!
**Note this code does not work on Design Space Access, digital content, machines, EasyPress, Brightpad
Instructions:
- Download Free Lego Label SVG files –>HERE<–

- Upload each SVG into Cricut Design Space.
**Make sure to click on each label and select attach so that the Cricut will cut out the design in the format designed.

- After you load each SVG into your Canvas then copy it and size one label to 4in wide and the other for 5 in wide.

- Set your machine to Vinyl and cut each colored mat.

- After you are finished cutting the vinyl carefully weed each label.
**Honestly most of the labels are quick and easy to week. The Lego Batman on the black labels are very finely detailed so they took the most time and care to weed. However, it looks amazing so it is totally worth it.

- Cut a piece of transfer tape to the size of the label, peel the back off and place over the weeded label and firmly press it down using the scraper from your essential tool kit.

- Carefully peel Vinyl backing off the label and then place vinyl labels on your buckets.
**I Placed the 5in wide label on the long side of the bucket and the 4in wide on the end (or short side of the bucket.)

- Sort your legos into each bucket by color and stack!

I love how the buckets look, and I love even more that my kids aren’t just dumping all their legos into a massive pile in the middle of their room when playing with them.

I hope you enjoyed my tutorial for this Month’s Inspire Your Creativity DIY Challenge. As in months past I am co-hosting the Inspire My Creativity link up along with some of my favorite fellow crafty bloggers on the 2nd Wednesday of each month! Make sure to check out the other great Thrift Store Makeover projects for this months link up (found at the end of the post) and don’t forget to share your own projects with us.

Next Month’s theme challenge is going to be Buttons. I can’t wait to see what everyone is inspired to create! I invite you to check back on the 2nd Wednesday in February (February 12th) to see what I will be making for my Inspire My Creativity Craft. Oh, and you are welcome to join in the fun and link up your craft as well. I would love to see it!

Brilliant! Sorting legos by color . . . this makes so much more sense than sorting them by sets!

I love my Cricuts (I have both the Air 2 and now the Maker). They are well worth the cost for you can do sooo much with them.
