How To Create a Grab & Go Car Kit For Your Summer Day Trips and Travel

In our family, we love to travel and explore. In addition to major road trips, we love to take advantage of taking tons of mini day trips to explore Hiking trails, parks, museums, festivals, and even trips to the local mall. This is especially true during the Summer months. If there is 1 thing we have learned over the years of travel excursions with our kids it the vital importance of always having snacks and water on hand. If our kids get hungry while we are our or worse thirsty then things go down hill fast. Let me tell you having 3 energetic kids break down on you can quickly spoil an afternoon like nothing else.

That’s why now we like to be prepared with a grab and go car kit which consists of our kid’s favorite snacks, a picknick blanket, and most importantly Water (since water isn’t always available where and when it is it can be expensive. like $4 for a small 12oz bottle. No joke!).

In my efforts to keep my kids adequately hydrated during our busy Summer months while we are out and about, we go through a lot of bottled water. This is why I am excited that at Walmart you can get Nestlé® Pure Life® 35 pack for the same cost as their 32 pack! Seriously, as a mom, every dollar counts and to get those 3 extra bottles for the same price as the 32 pack is a great deal.  ** While You can find Nestle products at Walmart online, you can only get the 35  pack when you visit the store. Online you can only get the 24 pack. I am glad the local Walmart in Orem, Utah totally has the 35 Pack. “If this version of Nestle Pure Life is not available in your local Walmart, please ask a store manager about getting the product in your area.”

Putting together a Grab and Go car kit for Summer outings is actually pretty easy. 

Step 1. Find a container. I like to use one of those little fabric storage boxes because they are the perfect size to fit in a corner of my trunk, they are light weight and have a nifty handle. You can find them everywhere, even at Walmart.

Step 2, Buy a case of water. For short trips, I will just put a bottle for each family member in my grab and go box (leaving the rest of the pack at home for later trips). For longer day trips or road trips, I like to just get a whole case of water bottles that I put in my trunk either next to or under the grab and go box.

I love using bottled water because it is convenient to our grab and go lifestyle which means we are more likely to have enough water for our needs on hand when we want it. Step 3. Buy your favorite kids snacks, I love getting the little individual-sized treat bags (for goldfish, Keebler cookies, animal crackers, cheese nips etc) as well as granola bars, fruit snacks and occasionally some boxes of candy as a special treat.

Step 4. A designated picknick blanket. I like to actually have 2 that I rotate (so I can wash one if it gets too dirty while still having one on hand). I like to have a blanket on hand in case the place we are visiting doesn’t allow you to eat your snacks inside (and you don’t want crumbs all over your car. The kids love pulling out our picnic blanket to eat on outside.

It’s amazing how something so simple as this Grab & Go car kit filled with snacks, bottled water, and a picnic blanket can have such an impact on your summer outings with your kids.  Seriously, the amount of breakdowns from my littles has dropped dramatically since we started doing this.
