What we Learned at The 2015 Uplift Families Parenting Conference

Sharing is caring!

This last weekend was the Uplift Families Parenting Conference at Thanksgiving Point.

I was soo excited that as one of the 2015 Blog Partners for (The First Lady of Utah Jeanette Herbert's Initiative) Uplift Families, I got to attend with my amazing Husband.

I'll be honest, I think my husband came with me for two reasons: 1. To support me & 2. Because we don't often have the opportunity to have date nights away from home and we really needed one.

Due to our baby sitter running late we got to the even near the end of dinner. Even so the food was fantastic.  We just wanted to sit and savor the deliciousness that was our dinner, but before we knew it, it was time to head into the barn to hear the presentations.

I could tell my husband wasn't exactly thrilled about spending the evening listening to people talk about parenting and families. That changed quickly however.  Before I knew it my husband who normally isn't one to take notes was scribbling away on his program just like I was.

The Presenters all did an amazing job covering topic that ranged from the importance of Family Dinners together, the importance of teaching our children about pain/failure & how to overcome, fighting the new drug of Pornography, the importance of being Financially wise,  how to teach our children to be self governed and understanding our roles as parents/

Here are just a few highlights from my husband and my notes:

-Studies show that children and teens who eat dinner with their families at least 5 times a week are 33% less likely to fall prey to drugs and alcohol.

-First Lady of Utah, Jeanette Herbert.

-We need to allow our children to experience pain in life. At the same time we need to give them proper perspective (ie Failure only lasts for a while, & failure only exists if you give up. )

-Brad Barton

-There are 3 things our youth want us to understand about Pornography:

  1.  They want us to understand the Science of Pornography
  2.  They want us to understand that Pornography has changed
  3. They want us to understand that we are a MAJOR part of the Solution.

-Clay Olsen

-We have the power to shape how our children see themselves.

-Carmen Rasmusen Herbert

-We need to Change our Beliefs of money to change our financial circumstances.

- Lucy Delgadillo

-We may be the Gardner, but the power is in the seed.  Gardens need conditions (boundaries) for optimal growth. We need to know our seeds (for everyone is different). We need to nurture their needs (safety, trust, appreciation, validation) Protect from the weeds that would choke the seeds.

- Matt Townsend

  8. These are very helpful especially for first time parents. Parenting is not something you can perfect, but you can definitely aim to be the best parent you can become and understanding your child is one step closer to that.

  9. Both my kids are grown up, but I still like learning new parenting tips. I'm the one taking care of my twin granddaughters and I need to update my (grand)parenting skills, too.

    1. Exactly! As long as you have children in your life it is a good idea to continue improving your parenting skills.

  10. With seven children I understand how parenting is like a prism. Each child requires unique parenting.

    1. That is soo true. None of my children are the same. That's why I am always trying to learn more to be a better parent.

  11. I really agree with letting our kids make mistakes. It's not fun to watch, but that's how they mature, learn and grow.

    1. Yeah it is hard to watch them make mistakes, but when we allow that to happen they learn faster so they don't keep making the same mistake.

  12. I'm jealous! I would LOVE to have the chance to attend a parenting conference. I need a fresh perspective!

    1. All the presentations were recorded and you can view them on the uplift families YouTube channel that I linked to in the post. I'm sure you would enjoy watching them.

  13. Wow, this sounds like a great conference! I don't have kids yet and I even wish I was there lol. I especially like the pornography portion because I have an ex who battled addiction with that, and it is no joke!

    1. You can view all the presentations on their YouTube channel that I linked in the post. The presentation I pornography was amazing!!

  14. How great that you and your hubby were able to attend this event! With the number of news reports reflecting obviously bad parenting and dysfunctional families, it would seem we need MORE of these events and more people need to attend them!

  15. Conferences are a great way of learning more about yourself and your family and in some ways can bring you closer together.

  16. This was so inspirational! I'm not a mom yet but I want to be the best mom I can be when I get pregnant.

    1. Its never too early to start preparing. I am sure when your time comes that you will be a great parent. Why? Because you care and that is the biggest step.

  17. It's always great learning new parenting tips. You and your husband wrote down some good points.
