10 Creative and Fun Easter Egg Hunt Ideas for the Whole Family

Sharing is caring!

Are you looking for ideas for this year’s Easter Egg Hunt?

I adore Easter. It is one of my favorite holidays. And as a mother of 3, an aspect of Easter I enjoy putting together is the Easter Egg Hunt. Easter egg hunts are a beloved tradition in many families, but sometimes it can be hard to come up with new and exciting ways to make them fresh each year. Here are 10 creative Easter egg hunt ideas to make this year’s hunt the best one yet!

Alphabet Egg Hunt

Hide plastic eggs that have letters written on them and have kids find all the letters to spell out a word or phrase. Each egg can have candy or fun treats in them that they get to enjoy once they find them all and figure out what the word is supposed to be.

You can do this with small or medium plastic eggs to make them harder to find or you can use these large 7in ones available on Amazon here to make it easier for little kids. (Fewer eggs but you can fit more inside each egg.)

Outdoor Adventure

Hide eggs in hard-to-find places like up in trees or under rocks, to make it a bit more challenging and adventurous. Honestly, this happens whenever my husband is in charge of putting out the eggs. He is always trying to find crazy places to find the eggs and my kids love it.

Scavenger Hunt

Instead of just hiding eggs, create a scavenger hunt by leaving clues that lead to the eggs. For example, the first clue could be “Look under the thing that cools our food” which leads the kids to the refrigerator where they find the next clue.

Years ago our family was in Ireland during Easter. We couldn’t find plastic easter eggs anywhere to fill with candy or toys for a traditional American-style Easter egg hunt. So we did this. My husband wrote up clues that we put throughout our rental home and they led to our bedroom where we had some delicious chocolate Easter treats for the whole family to enjoy together. It was so much fun watching out kids work together to solve the riddles that led to the Easter surprise we had put together for them. Now that my kids are older we want to do this again but make the clues harder so they have to work to solve them.

Easter Bunny Footprints

Use a stencil or make your own footprints with chalk or flour leading up to the eggs. This is a fun idea for an Easter egg hunt with little kids. You could even have the footprints lead all over the year ending in a nest of eggs. If you don’t want to create your own Easter Bunny footprint stencil you can buy on on Amazon here.

Color-Coded Egg Hunt

Assign each child a specific color to look for and hide that color of egg all around the house or yard.

We have done this with our kids before and they loved it. Since each kid was assigned their own color we were able to hide the older kids’ eggs in more hard-to-find places while making it easy for the younger kids to find their colored eggs. We found this was great when dealing with a mixture of older and younger kids.

Blindfolded Egg Hunt

Blindfold kids and have them search for eggs using only their sense of touch. A blindfolded hunt is a fun idea for older kids to add a bit of a fun challenge. You will want to have your cell phone or camera ready to catch all the fun bumbling moments of your kids trying to maneuver around blind as they search for those elusive Easter Eggs.

Golden Egg

Hide 1-6 golden eggs that contain a special prize like a toy or a gift card. This is a fun way to add a bit of fun to a traditional hunt. While the rest of the eggs are easy to find the Golden one with the special prize is harder. You can get the special gold eggs on Amazon here.

Easter Egg Relay Race

Divide into teams and race to see who can collect all of their team’s eggs first. You can do this race a few ways. You can divide the yard for each team’s eggs or assign colors to each team to collect. This is great for a bigger egg hunt with more kids like with cousins or neighbors.

Egg Decorating Contest

Have kids decorate the eggs before hiding them, then have a contest to see who can find the most creatively decorated egg. You can decorate boiled eggs or If you don’t want to hide real eggs for the hunt there are fun egg sets here on Amazon that come with markers for your kids to decorate.

Glow-in-the-Dark Egg Hunt

You can get special glow-in-the-dark Easter eggs that are more transparent to better see the light through. They also have small specialty-sized glowsticks that stick into the base (with room for you to put candy or treats inside as well) they are available on Amazon in a 36pk here. Then you just turn off the lights for an exciting nighttime hunt. You can even use black lights to make it even more fun.

Hopefully, these ideas will give you some inspiration to make your family’s Easter egg hunt unique and fun this year.
