DIY Harry Potter (Cardstock) Flying Key Ornaments

Flying Keys Ornaments are perfect for Harry Potter Christmas trees.

When making my decorations for my Harry Potter Christmas Tree I knew that I wanted to have some flying key ornaments. While most people make flying keys using real antique keys and hot glued feathers. While those sort of flying keys look really cool, they were a bit out of my budget. So I thought about it a while and decided that I would just design my own to make out of layers of cardstock with my Cricut Explore Air 2.

In the end, I created 4 different antique flying key ornaments and then made 3 of each key to have plenty for my tree. Each Key has 3 layers of black cardstock (the middle layer was the key with the wings, the next layer on each side is the key itself. ) The final layers on both sides I cut out of Glitter Cardstock. Bronze Glitter for the key and Silver for the top layer of the wings.

Materials Needed:

Instructions:

Key 1:

  • (1) Center key with wings – 3.84 inches Wide & 2.149 inches High
  • (2) Middle layer keys  – 0.913 inches wide & 2.149 inches high
  • (1) Front Key  –  0.913 inches wide & 2.149 inches high
  • (1) Back Key  – 0.913 inches wide & 2.149 inches high
  • (2) Sets of outer wings – 3.845 inches wide & 1.484 inches high

Key 2:

  • (1) Center key with wings – 3.803 inches wide & 2.409 inches high
  • (2) Middle layer keys – 0.967 inches wide & 2.409 inches high
  • (1) Front Key – 0.967 inches wide & 2.409 inches high
  • (1) Back Key – 0.967 inches wide & 2.409 inches high
  • (2) Sets of outer wings  – 3.845 inches wide & 1.484 inches high

Key 3:

  • (1) Center key with wings – 3.843 inches wide & 2.356 inches high
  • (2) Middle layer keys – 0.902 inches wide & 2.355 inches high
  • (1) Front Key – 0.902 inches wide & 2.355 inches high
  • (1) Back Key – 0.902 inches wide & 2.355 inches high
  • (2) Sets of outer wings – 3.845 inches wide & 1.484 inches high

Key 4:

  • (1) Center key with wings – 3.846 inches wide & 2.421 inches high
  • (2) Middle layer keys – 0.922 inches wide & 2.421 inches high
  • (1) Front Key – 0.922 inches wide & 2.421 inches high
  • (1) Back Key – 0.922 inches wide & 2.421 inches high
  • (2) Sets of outer wings – 3.845 wide & 1.484 inches high

  • Once you have the right number of copies of each design as well as the sizing set then use the select all button and duplicate the key sets 3 times (for 12 ornaments)
  • Click the make it button and load your cardstock onto your mats. I used Cricut’s Black cardstock for the inner key layers, Brown/Bronze Glitter Cardstock for the outer key, and Silver Glitter Cardstock for the outer wings.

**Use the standard grip mat for the normal cardstock and set the machine dial to cardstock. Use the Strong Grip mat for the Glitter Cardstock and set the machine dial to Custom and then select Glitter Cardstock from the custom materials list in Design space.

  • Carefully  remove the cardstock keys and glue the layers together with a glue stick
  • Hang on your tree with an ornament hook or ribbon.

I love how the vintage flying key ornaments turned out. My kids did too. These would be great to hang dangling from the ceiling for a Harry Potter party no matter the season.
