Capture the Memories: Free Printable First Day of School Signs for Every Grade
It’s hard to believe that August is already here! For many of us parents, that means school is just around the corner. While we homeschool and usually wait to kick things off until the Monday after Labor Day, I know plenty of my friends and family are gearing up for an early August start.
No matter when your family begins the school year—or whether your kids attend public school, private school, charter school, or homeschool—one of my absolute favorite back-to-school traditions is First Day of School photos.
Every year, I snap a picture of each of my kids holding a “First Day” sign. Then we do it again on the last day of school. It’s such a simple way to capture their growth throughout the year, and when you put the photos side by side—or better yet, collect them over time—it becomes such a fun keepsake to look back on when they graduate.
Over the years, I’ve shared several different free printable designs here on the blog to help you capture those sweet first-day moments. This year, I’m excited to add a fresh new design to the collection!

These updated First Day of School signs feature bold, classic colors that pop in photos—perfect for boys and girls alike. The printable pack includes every grade from Preschool through 12th Grade, all bundled together in a ready-to-print 14-page PDF. Simply choose the grade you need for each of your kids, print it out, and you’re good to go!
You can print at home or take the file to your favorite copy center. Regular printer paper works fine, but I recommend printing on cardstock for better durability and crisp, photo-ready results.
And if you’ve never done First Day of School pictures before—don’t worry! It’s never too late to start a new tradition. Whether your kids are just starting Kindergarten or already halfway through grade school, now’s a great time to begin building those sweet photo memories.
Wishing you and your kiddos a fantastic school year ahead!
